Episode 36: Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning with Char Booth

Listen to the podcast (~62 minutes)

Join us for a fascinating, lively discussion as we talk with Char Booth about her book, Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy for Library Educators.  Discussion includes becoming a reflective teacher and master of instructional literacy, and how both the book's pedological frameworks and practical worksheets both help inform this process. And we also learn about Char's most embarrassing moment of teaching!

Char Booth is the Instruction Services Manager & E-Learning Librarian at Claremont Colleges Library. She blogs at info-mational, http://infomational.wordpress.com/, and tweets at @charbooth.  Char recently won the 2012 ACRL Rockman Publication of the Year Award, and begins as an ACRL Immersion Faculty Member this year.

  1. Great episode. I've been thinking about the "What's in it for me" approach when giving basic library orientations to new students as part of the admissions process. Most of them have no research topic in mind--no courses yet that have that requirement. Most aren't really even in the inquiring frame of mind. My idea: ask them to shout out their favorite musicians/bands, illnesses that have befallen family members, favorite cars, favorite actors, favorite authors, favorite genres....etc. etc. Then we can research a few using library resources and, hopefully, they'll get something more out of it.

    thanks for the ideas.

  2. I *love* that idea! It's like library orientation a la "Second City"!!!!! I think, also, they'd be so surprised to see what is researched out there in academia -- esp. with bands, music, etc. Thanks for sharing such a great idea!
